KEVIN OSMOND - BIOGRAPHY

Osmond was born in Chelmsford, Essex, and grew up in the small neighbouring village of Castle Hedingham. He left school at age 16 without any qualifications to work towards a traditional apprenticeship in cabinet making and restoration. Osmond then travelled around Australasia, Asia and Europe for several years and went on to study fine art at West Thames College, London, followed by a degree in sculpture at Chelsea College of Art & Design and then a masters degree at the Royal College of Art.

Osmond sold most his final RCA show and consecutively won the Penguin Books Sculpture Bursary and the Credit Suisse First Boston Award in 2000. He is the first person in his entire extended family to gain a university education.

Through investigations into the material and immaterial, weight and weightlessness, surface and space, Osmond deals with notions of metamorphosis and evolution. He creates biomorphic and geometric structures – journeys into microcosms and macrocosms that are united in their fragility.

An industrious and ambitious artist, Osmond uses new materials and applies new techniques to well known materials, creating a sense of space and scale in his sculptures. He has worked on both large and fine detailed work for public and private commissions, and exhibitions.

In 2001 Osmond set up his first studio in Tulse Hill, Southeast London. Since then he has shown in a number of group and solo exhibitions, including: Disposable Universe at Space Station Sixty-five, Outsized at MoDA, Disposable at the Economist building, Astrolix at Penguin Books, and Together Again at the Pumphouse Gallery. He has developed a detailed website showcasing his artworks, to be found at: www.kevinosmond.com. In 2005 Osmond was given The Mark Tanner Sculpture Award, which will help to subsidise a new body of work to be shown in a major solo exhibition at the Standpoint Gallery, London, during September and October 2006.
